The Today man … the Tomorrow man

There are people in the world who are always on the run to get to where there is something to be done and when they get there they make sure what is to be done has been done to the best of their ability. To them their future is deeply rooted in what they are able to do today. They take their destinies into their hands and work, work and work non stop making sure that the future the whole generation is expecting to happen starts today. As others are fast asleep, the today man sees whatever comes their way as a challenge that needs to be confronted and timely and promptly. I call them the Today’s people. Even when they sleep and any dream comes up they get up and go straight to work at it and on it. They dream and to them every dream has a meaning and they don’t leave it to chance. For instance, they dream that they are flying in the air they would not say but this is just a dream so forget it. No, they would not dismiss that as just a dream, a game their mind, whilst relaxed was playing on them but rather they will wake up from their sleep and start working on the project that would make it possible for them to fly. The today man spends little time to sleep and it is possible that he ends up sleeping less than the six hours psychologists would like us to sleep in any give twenty four hours.

The “Today Man” invented the aeroplane, the locomotive engine, the diesel engine, chewing gum, light bulbs, crayons, car windshield wiper, the telephone, computer and what have you. The Today man has made travelling from one location to another so easy that it takes matter of hours for a person to move from one continent to another by air. It is because of the Today Man that there is inter-relationship between nations. The world has become a global village where there is free movement of goods and services across international borders.

Where can the Today Man be found? They live in the developed part of the world in the United States, The United Kingdom, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc. They made their environments what they are today. The had the dream and backed that with the vision for today which would brighten their corner where they are.

The “Tomorrow man” gets nothing done. Ask him but when are you going to look for work, he will say, tomorrow. The “drainage is blocked and needs to be removed” the answer will be I will do it tomorrow. To the tomorrow’s man, the world will be a better place for us if someone else is responsible but not him. They have the best of resources in the world, they have the best of plans in the world, they have the blue-print for the best hospitals, schools, laboratories and count all that you want to count, they look to tomorrow and the results are the same, nothing gets done.

The tomorrow man does not mind the conditions of their environment whether it is derelict, whether there is no recreational facilities, no running water, electricity, proper accommodation and what have you, the tomorrow man is still waiting for “Tomorrow”.

I will liken the Tomorrow man to the so called developing countries or the third world but my focus is specifically, Ghana. It looks as if Ghana would boast of the greater proportion of the world tomorrow man. This is one beautiful nation blessed with human and material resources capable of becoming  one of the richest countries in the world. Ghana was known as the Gold Coast because of the abundance of gold deposits. The country has explored and exploited gold since the 18th century and one wonders why the very place where gold is mined, there is no accessible roads, running water, schools and any modern social amenities or infrastructure. In Ghana today, millions are dying everyday of malaria, the surest and fastest way of curing malaria would have been pro-active environmental systems and policies, proper hygiene and proper waste management, but as indicated, the country is waiting for those to be done tomorrow. The hospitals are dilapidated; there are not enough places for in-patients, no drugs, no running water but all the so called administrators are tomorrow man. Million are dying everyday on the roads in Ghana, though they have sector ministers and deputies for roads and Highway, the “Tomorrow Man “attitude makes it impossible for anything to be done about it. Only yesterday, 21st May 2012, Citifm reported the menace of suicidal deaths and no wonder, no state agency has picked it up to do something about it.

Ghana has no road networks, no railway networks, no port network, our security agencies are non existent, there are no environmental, housing, educational, child care, welfare, employment policies and the “Today Man” would wonder why a country with a population of over 22million people should put up with all the above.

I call upon all the sons and daughters of Ghana to become Today’s People which is the only way we can eliminate the scourge of poverty in the country. The time has come for the Ghanaian to take their destinies into their hands and move away from being tomorrow’s people. We owe it to our children and their children’s children.

Started Ghanamindset in 2011 purposely to help our Ghanaian society have a better view of appreciating that mediocrity has never built and develop any nation. We have this layback attitude that we always think, when something is going wrong, " I am not responsible to fix it". There are many instances that we could have applied common sense to tackle a situation but our laissez-faire attitude would let us walk past unconcerned. Born and educated in Ghana in 1952 and currently living in the UK.
